MIPAS-STR (Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding - STRatospheric air-craft), a new cryogenic remote-sensing instrument, is currently under construction. It has been re-designed for the Russian high-altitude aircraft GEOPHYSICA.
The objective of MIPAS-STR is to measure the cross sections of atmospheric trace compounds such as ClONO2, N2O5, NO, NO2, HNO3, N2O and CH4, which are important for stratospheric ozone research. To isolate the instru-ment from the vibrations of the aircraft, a novel semi-adaptive interface between MIPAS and GEOPHYSICA has been designed.
The system should effectively isolate MIPAS from motions in all six degrees of freedom. Automatic leveling compensates for mass reduction due to evaporation of refrigerants and for variation in the aircraft pitch angle.
