The central goals for mechanical engineering are still the increase of accuracy and throughput of the machines, especially for all kinds of handling and processing machines. In the accuracy and the reproductibility of the processes an extremely high quality standard has already been reached. Partially these processes are already monitored or even controlled by mechatronic means. The goal of reaching a greater throughput requires an increasing of machine dynamics with an enlargement of the work widths at the same time. This is only possi-ble by application of leightweight structures which often results in a decrease of structural damping. From the attempt to increase the machine speed thus only a decrease of the accu-racy follows caused by arising vibrations due to the geometrical and mechanical boundary conditions.
To control these dynamics is the main point. Constructional, i.e. passive means, are mostly exhausted. Active systems however offer a variety of possibilities to purposefully influence vibrations and represent the consequent realization of the principle to control dynamics by dynamic means. Application examples will be shown where active systems have been applied after having carried out a measuring or FEM analysis. In these cases the active components have not only been applicated but the complete structure has been optimized considering the active components. The results are smart structures which make possible to maintain the high accuracy of the machines also for high processing speeds.
