Considering urban vehicle, the powertrain represents one of the major vehicle exterior noise sources. The oil pan contributes significantly to the overall powertrain sound emission, especially at idle and during full load acceleration. Efficient noise reduction, therefore, deals with oil pan noise reduction as one of its primary goals. Passive optimization measures, such as structural optimiza-tion and acoustic shielding, can be limited by e.g. light-weight design, package and thermal con-straints. Therefore, the potential of the Active Structure Acoustic Control (ASAC) method for noise reduction has been investigated within the EU-sponsored project InMAR. The method has proven to have significant noise reduction potential regarding oil pan vibration induced noise.
The paper reports on activities on the application of an ASAC system based on piezo-ceramic foil technology with regard to a passenger car oil pan.
The potential of the Active Structure Acoustic Control (ASAC) method for this application was in-vestigated by means of FEM/BEM simulations of the oil pan. The positions of sensor(s) and actua-tor(s) have been defined in order to achieve the best Active Noise Control system performance. Different semi passive and active control strategies have been considered. Four of them have been implemented and the vibration damping for each system has been investigated on a test stand. The performance of the different control strategies have been compared.
